In the nearly 20 years since Persona 4’s 2008 launch, the Investigation Team’s story has been retold multiple times through an enhanced “definitive edition” in Persona 4 Golden, two anime adaptations, and a manga. Persona 4 Revival, the new remake coming in February, has a lot of interpretations of the original game to pull from, and the game’s recent trailer from Anime Expo has fans hopeful that Atlus is leaning into one of the community’s favorite interpretations of Yu Narukami, the protagonist of the game and its various spin-offs.
Persona 4 The Animation was the first anime adaptation of the game (followed by a Golden adaptation a few years later), and while it suffers from the same pacing issues most long-video-game-to-short-TV-show adaptations do, it is one of the few examples of a game adaptation that I think works well enough that if I can’t convince someone to actually boot up the game, I tell them to at least give the anime a shot. It gives the most important story and character beats their due, and I watched it multiple times during the height of my Persona 4 obsession in the Golden era.
One of the best parts about it is how it handles Yu. In the original Persona 4, Yu is a “silent” protagonist for most of the game, only ever speaking when players have a dialogue option. Persona 4: The Animation had to figure out how to characterize a hero that was mostly meant to be a self-insert, and went with an incredibly deadpan version of the teen whose one-liners and stoic awkwardness make for some of the funniest moments in the show.
While this characterization hasn’t always extended to Persona 4’s various sequels and spin-offs, it has become one of the most popular versions of Yu across the series. Now, it looks like Persona 4 Revival is at least somewhat leaning into it.
During Anime Expo, Atlus released a new Revival trailer showcasing Rise, the teen idol support character who helps guide the Investigation Team through battles. Yu’s shown a few times throughout, and one clip shows him watching Rise perform and instead of enthusiastically cheering her on, he flips up a heart-shaped sign with a glazed look in his eye like he’s infatuated, but still maintains his unfazed composure.

The shot may have also kicked off one of Persona 4 Revival’s first memes, as folks are now photoshopping Yu’s sign for their own goofs.

We’ll see how much this deadpan delivery comes through in Revival when it comes to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 18.
