Physically Attractive, Pity About The Modern Additions
KitGuru wanted to love the Epomaker RT100 Pro keyboard but ran into serious issues with the software, however kudos to Epomaker for listening to their feedback and making some improvements. The physical body of the keyboard resembles a keyboard of yore but hides modern pre-lubed switches and plate-mounted stabilizers. The RT100 Pro also comes with a detachable screen and it’s look and the software which lets you customize the display are where the problems are found.
The software, as originally shipped, required admin privileges to run which is a huge mistake. Even better, once launched and given permissions your system suddenly started running new services like “screen_capture_service.exe”, “keyboard_monitor_service.exe” and “rhythm_service.exe”. Amongst other things, those services ate 200MB of very expensive RAM and made the power draw of the GPU jump 20W on the desktop; in game you would see a performance drop thanks to them.
Epomaker updated the software so these services only launch when requested though it is unclear if they still need admin. The screen is also rather dim and is a detachable screen with no batteries, so it loses functionality when disconnected. The next version may improve that, or if you love the look you could just use the RT100 Pro with the screen permanently detached and with a generic driver.
